Philadelphia Marathon

The first Philadelphia marathon otherwise known as the Philadelphia Independence Marathon started way back in 1954. It is always scheduled to take place on the 3rd Sunday in November and is put on by the city.  The course takes runners through city streets finally ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Philadelphia Marathon is expected to have around 11,000 participants this year.

Runners from all over the world come to run in this race. Last years male winner, John Crews, was from Raleigh, North Carolina and finished the race in 2h 17 m 15s. The female winner, Jutta Merilainen hailed from Finland, and finished the race in 2h 46m 44s. The first place winners in the Philadelphia Marathon will each win $3500 with monetary winnings being awarded up to 5th place.

The weather in Philadelphia this morning is a sun cloud mix with a temperature of 46F. Runners took off from the start at 7:00 AM EST and should be beginning to cross the finish line at any time now. The race also featured a half marathon with an expected 9000 runners. With over 50,000 spectators expected the Philadelphia Marathon is sure to be a good race.
